Devon Monk spent her early childhood tucked behind couches or any other
place with low light, "ruining her eyes" and reading. Her love of fairytales
turned into a love of adventure, magic, future science, romance, mystery,
humor, noir, and anything else she could get her hands on.
She wrote her first story when she was six. When her teacher praised its
quality, Devon was surprised. She looked it over again and all she thought
was, "I can do better than this."
And thus, a writer was born.
Join us to hear Devon read from Magic At the Gate, her newest installment in the Allie Beckstrom series of dark fantasy novels. Set partly in our own beloved neighborhood of St. Johns, the series pits magical detective Allie against dark leaders in the world of magery--and against forces in her own past, including (yes Luke) her own father. Devon also has produced a collection of short fiction, A Cup of Normal.
Light refreshments will be served.
Now reading: Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko
Join us on Thursday, 7 October at 6:00pm.
"Demanding but confident and beautifully written" (Boston Globe), this is the story of a young Native American returning to his reservation after surviving the horrors of captivity as a prisoner of the Japanese during World War II. Drawn to his Indian past and its traditions, his search for comfort and resolution becomes a ritual--a curative ceremony that defeats his despair. Ceremony was recommended to the group by Molly Gloss, author of our greatly enjoyed August selection, Wild Life. Molly will interview Leslie Marmon Silko onstage at Lincoln Hall (Portland State University) as part of an author conversation series produced by Portland Arts & Lectures. Click here to learn more about that event.Looking for a book group? This welcoming bunch invites the public to join in. Find out what we thought of our latest selection, and help pick the next one. Current selections are available in the bookstore at a 20% discount.
