Wallace Swenson signs Morgan's Pasture

Start: Sat, 09/04/2010 - 11:00am

End: Sat, 09/04/2010 - 1:00pm

Wallace Swenson will visit to meet the public and sign copies of his new novel, Morgan's Pasture, in advance of his Sunday reading.

Child psychologist Will Border retreats to the summer of his thirteenth
year after a traumatic event forces him to reexamine childhood events
and the choices he made in becoming a man. A period piece set in 1950s
rural America, Morgan’s Pasture guides young adult readers in
examining their own roles in life as they develop into loners,
followers, or even reluctant leaders like Will. With one eye on child
psychology and the other on plain common sense, Morgan’s Pasture
offers a unique perspective on the growth of a boy and the longing of a
man for a mythic peaceful pasture, not as a place to live, but as a
reason to.

Employed from the age of twelve, Wallace J. Swenson
swept floors and cleaned pool hall spittoons during his rural Idaho
boyhood, and was a meteorologist and computer systems specialist during
his twenty years in the U.S. Air Force. He supervised a 911 center for
a few years and then designed, built, and managed an Emergency
Operations Center at a nuclear testing facility for another half-dozen
years. An award-winning poet, novelist, and short-story writer, he
lives and works where he grew up. Morgan’s Pasture is Swenson’s first published novel.

n its second year, the Market Day Poetry Series, hosted by St. Johns Booksellers in conjunction with the St Johns Farmers Market, takes place every Saturday of the Market, June 5th through September 25th.
Writer's Workshop with Ian Paulston: week 1

Start: Sat, 09/11/2010 - 2:00pm

End: Sat, 09/11/2010 - 4:30pm

Workshop your writing in a constructive, positive environment, with inspiration and insight from someone who cares! Instructor Ian Paulston presents an 8-week, roundtable-style workshop for writers. Writers will read original work and provide copies to the group for constructive feedback. The workshop meets weekly through October 30th. Cost for the 8-week series is $50. Space is limited, so reserve your spot soon.

Ian Paulston teaches fiction and memoir writing workshops in PCC's Continuing Education program. He has an MA in Creative Writing from Northern Arizona University. Ian is the creator and editor of Write Club USA, a journal focused on the literary accomplishments of everyday Portlanders. He remembers the first poem he wrote in second grade, because the principal made him read it over the school intercom. He's been writing ever since, and is determined to create a People's Literature of the United States. Ian lives in St. Johns--maybe you've seen him walking his two huskies!

Alan Botsford presents Walt Whitman of Cosmic Folklore

Start: Fri, 09/17/2010 - 7:00pm

End: Fri, 09/17/2010 - 9:00pm

Walt Whitman of Cosmic Folklore will change the way we think not just
about Whitman, but about our relationship to poetry. In the space of
these inspired dialogues, lyric essays, and poems, Botsford takes us
back and forth across oceans of the imagination, of time and space, to
arrive finally back where we started: contemplating a body of
literature, only now reinvigorated with deep spiritual energy and laden
with the fullness of the enlightened soul. Reading this is unlike no
other reading you will do. It transcends the borders of genre, time,
imagination, and crosses over into the purely experiential. Alan
Botsford, and Walt Whitman himself, dare you to stand on the precipice
of true art, sway back and forth in awe, and to fall in.

Alan Botsford is an associate professor at Kanto Gakuin University in Japan and co-edits Poetry Kanto, a bilingual journal of the interplay of voices East, West, and beyond. His previous poetry collections are A Book of Shadows and mamaist: learning a new language, of which Japan Times says, "Like the Dadaists his title borrows and departs from, [Botsford] throws out convention to create a new art...he breathes new life into words by the sheer brilliance of his constructions."
