By now, just about everyone knows about the Tao Te Ching, the seminal
text of Philosophical Taoism. But how many of you, dear readers, have
ever heard of The Chuang Tzu, the other founding text of Philosophical
Taoism? For the uninitiated, in some respects, it is as impenetrable
as the Tao Te Ching, but the Chuang Tzu is both longer and more
straightforward than the Tao Te Ching and so might be a better fit for
those seeking a good introduction to one of the world's oldest and
finest philosophies. Its style is anecdotal, which makes good reading
for all those interested in stories, per se, rather than the dense
abstractions that too many philosophical treatises (both Eastern and
Western) are subject to and treats of the conversations and happenings
of individuals (mostly of the never heard of, or at least long
forgotten sort), as they make their way about the countryside or go
about the business of "chopping wood and carrying water". Often
humorous in that subtle way that myths sometimes are and sometimes
rather, o.k., I'll just say it, inscrutable, it is also always
fascinating, humane, and so often spot on, that it will no doubt charm
it's way into the heart and mind of any reader who enjoys a good ramble
and scintillating conversation. Absolutely one of my top five or ten
favorite books of all time.
